6 Household Items You Need to Throw Out Now

Make your home a healthier environment by throwing out these 6 items

6 Household Items You Need to Throw Out NowAre you trying to keep a clean, healthy home? These common household items could be compromising your efforts! Learn what you should toss now and why.

Hazardous Waste: We all know that certain materials like aerosol cans, used batteries, motor oil, old electronics, and expired medications aren’t supposed to go in the regular trash. Unfortunately, this often leads to people having little stockpiles of hazardous items scattered around the house or garage. Get your act together and finally throw out these items! You can find out where you can safely dispose of these and other hazards with a quick online search.

Old Tupperware: Plastic food containers made before 2010 may contain a chemical called BPA, which could leach out into your food if you ever warm up food in the container. BPA is bad for your health! Eliminate this health risk and an eyesore by throwing away old, scratched, or stained containers.

Old Makeup: If you’re using mascara that’s over 3 months old or lip gloss that’s over 6 months old, you could be exposing yourself to bacteria that could cause infection. To be safe, use up or throw out these items before microbes have a chance to grow.

Dirty Contact Lens Cases: Unless you have daily disposable contact lenses, you need to be thinking very carefully about where you keep your contacts. If your case is dirty—as studies show 92 percent of cases are—you could be risking eye irritation or even infection. Eye care experts agree lens cases should be tossed every 3 months at minimum.

Flat Pillows: You might be disgusted to learn that if your pillow is over 18 months old, you are resting your head on a sack of fungi, dead skin, and dust mites every night. Try folding your pillow in half and squeezing out the air—if it doesn’t spring back all nice and fluffy, you need to throw it out.

Dirty Kitchen Sponges: The very kitchen sponge you use to keep your dishes and counters clean is probably the most germ-ridden object in your house, according to some studies. Sanitize your sponge by microwaving it in an inch of water for 1 minute, and replace your sponge regularly.
